Symbian

Overview

One more an open-source OS from Nokia is the Symbian. Except as an OS, Symbian also is a software platform, and created specifically for Smartphones. Symbian has undergone many significant changes and developments. However, Symbian OS is one OS that is considered outdated and had to start facing eviction from the competition.

History

Founder/Inventor/Main Programmer

Symbian initially created by Symbian Ltd. However, after the company was acquired by Nokia in the year 2008, the development of Symbian OS was taken over by Nokia.

Version

These are versions of Symbian that you should know, including:
• Symbian OS 6.0, Symbian OS is the first generation that is used for Smartphones. This OS was first introduced in conjunction with the launch of the Nokia 9210 Communicator in June 2001. Symbian OS 6.0 has an updated version, which is Symbian OS 6.1
• Symbian OS 7.0, OS was released in 2003. Symbian OS 7.0 is not only used by Nokia, but also other brands, such as: Sony Ericsson, Motorola, etc. In this version added some features, such as: support for EDGE, IPv6. Then, there was an updated version of Symbian OS 7.0, which is Symbian OS 7.0s.
• Symbian OS 8.0, this OS provides many additional features, such as: CDMA support, 3G connectivity, two-way data streaming, etc. Symbian OS 8.0 was released in 2004 has some updated versions, namely: Symbian OS 8.1a and 8.1b
• Symbian OS 9.0, this OS is the first step toward a new era, because after this version, Symbian OS changed to the Symbian platform. Symbian OS 9.0 was released in 2004, and have some updated version, including: Symbian OS 9.1, 9.2, 9.3, 9.4, and 9.5.
• Symbian ^ 1, is the first generation of the Symbian platform, the Symbian platform is the successor to the Symbian OS. Symbian ^ 1 was released in 2009.
• Symbian ^ 2, is the first product of Symbian which is royalty-free, so many companies that then use the Symbian ^ 2.
• Symbian ^ 3, Symbian^ 3 was created to be a “next generation” Smartphones platform. Therefore, many new features were added, including: 2D & 3D graphics architecture, UI improvements, etc.. This version was launched on 15 February 2010.

Kernel type

Symbian wear microkernel, a mechanism that requires only a small amount of software that can run as an OS. Therefore, the performance of microkernel is not very good.
