Overview

iOS is the operating system created by Apple Inc. At first, iOS is used only for the iPhone, however, in its development iOS is also used for other Apple devices, such as: iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV. In iOS there are four abstraction layers, namely: the Core OS layer, the Core Services layer, the Media layer, and the Cocoa Touch layer.

History

iOS is a product developed by Apple Inc. on 9 june 2007, and released at the same month. At first iOS was not used as an operating system, not until 2008, Apple Inc. released it as an operating system with the name “iPhone OS X.” In 2010, Apple Inc. changed its name to “iOS” (this is done to distinguish the first IOS used by Cisco).

Version

Lots of iOS versions that have been released by Apple Inc.. Therefore, we only focus on the iOS used by the iPhone, among others:
• iOS 1.0 is the first version released by Apple Inc.. on 29 June 2007. This iOS version has some updated versions, such as: iOS 1.0.1, 1.0.2, 1.1.1, 1.1.2, 1.1.3, 1.1.4. In this version you can find several features, among others: Bug Fix Release, support for TV out, Interface speed improvements, and much more.
• iOS 2.0 is the next generation that was released on 11 July 2008, this version also has some updates, such as: iOS 2.0.1, 2.0.2, 2.1, 2.2, and 2.2.1. This iOS is used for the iPhone that has used 3G technology, and features that can be found, including: ability to turn the Wi-Fi back on while in Airplane mode, bug fixes, improved accuracy of the 3G signal strength display, etc.
• iOS 3.0 is the third generation was released by Apple Inc. on 17 June 2009. iOS 3.0 had several update version, namely: iOS 3.0.1, 3.1, 3.1.2, and 3.1.3. iOS is used for the iPhone with 3G technology. Some of the features added in this version include: HTML5 support, APIs allow third party apps to access videos and edit Them, resolves intermittent issue interrupt cellular network services Until restart, etc.
• iOS 4.0 is the latest generation, which was launched for the iPhone with 4G technology, and was released on 21 June 2010. There are several updates for the iOS 4.0, namely: iOS 4.0.1, 4.0.2, 4.1, 4.2, 4.2.1, 4.2.5 (CDMA only), 4.2.6 (CDMA only), 4.3 (GSM only), and 4.3.1. The features offered are very diverse, such as: personal hotspot feature, updated carrier settings, multitasking, and many more.

Kernel type

iOS using a hybrid kernel, a kernel architecture that combines the microkernel and monolithic kernel which is normally used as the OS of a computer. Hybrid is made with the same structure with the microkernel but working with the monolithic kernel working system.
